About This Painting
If you head to northern Israel, you’ll be able to visit Safed, one of the Four Holy Cities that is a sight for sore eyes. Long ago, Safed was a small, ordinary town. When crusaders set up shop there to fight against Muslims, the town began to grow. Today, the forts at the highest point in the city make up the Citadel. Under the Ottoman Empire, Safed welcomed many Jews and rabbis who were kicked out of Spain. The fact that this city saw so many famous rabbis only lends to its mystical, divine atmosphere. If you visit Safed, you’ll notice that the buildings are painted in blue to symbolize heaven and the afterlife. The wonderous nature of Safed has drawn many creative folks to the city to walk down the cobblestone streets and soak up the ambiance.
